GOP: 2 in 3 chance of retaining House according to Boehner

By wcolin - Posted on 24 April 2012

According to House majority leader John Boehner, Republicans have a 2 in 3 chance of retaining the majority status in the House of Representatives. Boehner admits that his party will lose seats in the 2012 election, which will narrow the current GOP majority from the 242-190 advantage they now enjoy. That leaves a 1 in 3 chance the Democrats could win enough seats, according to the majority leader. The Dems need to turnover 25 seats, plus retain the three vacant seats, to become the majority caucus again.

Oh, I sure hope Boehner must hand the gavel back to Pelosi. His leadership stinks. He had a chance of a lifetime opportunity for a grand bargain with Pres. Obama which would have been historic but he couldn't control his troops and gave in to the Tea Party. And now he just keeps crying, whining and saying no to anything President Obama proposes. Well, imagine the tears and sobbing if he loses the House after such a short time. Maybe that will inspire the GOP to actually govern and move to the center again. We can only hope.

You know, Kelly, I was very frustrated with President Obama about midway through his term. Not because he tried to compromise with the GOP (which was OK), but because, after being repeatedly slapped in the face by Republicans in Congress, he continued trying to compromise. The GOP's idea of compromise is obviously this: we (GOP) want "X", the president and Dems want "Y", lets compromise and say we will enact "X". After realizing that, Obama should have stopped trying to secure even one vote from the GOP, but he still tried to be bipartisan.

Trying to give in to the GOP is the reason why we did not get a large enough stimulus package, and thus have come out of the recession earlier; it's the reason why we did not even have a chance for a public option in the health care reform debate; it's the reason the Bush tax cuts were extended, significantly adding to the national debt. There were other less visible examples also.

Finally, the Ryan budget proposal seems to have pushed the president over the edge, and he called out the Republicans in general, and the tea party in particular. The SCOTUS Citizens United decision before that also rankled him, and he chided the five justices who voted for the decision for being partisan when, because of the lifetime nature of the appointment to the bench, they were supposed to be above politics.

I am looking forward to Obama's second term, when he can just flat out tell the GOP extreme right wingers to "stuff it."

I'm with you! Since Republicans know how toxic Ryan's budget is, the latest defense of it is that Ryan put out a far-right budget expecting the President to give his left-wing version and then in some fantasy dreamland they would meet in the middle to have a balanced, harmonized budget where everyone was happy and the deficit was erased and everybody equally shared the pain. The problem is that Ryan and his crew already made it clear they will not compromise on the one thing that could settle our debt issues: taxes. They will not raise one penny in taxes but expect the President to sign off on all these painful cuts to the poor and middle class. I realize President Obama compromised far too much in his first few years and left an impression as "punching bag," but do they really think he is an idiot and will give them cover for their heartless budget plan than even bishops have scolded Ryan for? I am also praying President Obama is given a second term where he can push an agenda which is only focused on reviving the economy/helping the poor and middle class/getting the rich to pay their fair share and does not consider the feelings of the poor Republicans who only seem to obstruct and get in the way. Maybe that was President Obama's plan all the time. If we keep the Senate in Democratic control and Democrats regain control of the House, that job will be much easier.

How can the GOP claim that they expected a compromise on the Ryan budget proposal, when they have not been willing to compromise on virtually ANYTHING during Obama's term? The one big thing they did agree to compromise on (the debt ceiling negotiations) they reneged on with the Ryan proposal.

These morons are not fooling me and, hopefully, not fooling most of the public. Hopefully, come November, these tea party types will be standing in the unemployment line.

Boehner is probably right, alas, but I agree that Obama is doing better or, at least, more comprehensible politicking than he was a year ago.

I get tickle pink when I hear the GOP and right wing complain about the President using tax payers money flying all over the united States. Their issue is he should be using campaign money when he is trying to sell the American people his ideas and polices. The perception from the GOP is that he is campaigning when he leaves the white house to talk directly to the American People  but that is the President’s style to be up close and personal with the American people when talking policies.  President Obama expressed during his campaign in 2008 that he would leave the bubble of the Whitehouse and go out and talk to the American people about his policies and solicit their ideas. The GOP appears to be threaten by the president’s ability to convey is ideas in an authentic and genuine manner, which can be very persuasive.

Also, there were some pundits and GOP candidates that were suggesting that the President should take a commercial flight and pay for it out of his own pocket when traveling to different places. Now let’s use our imagination for a minute!!------ Imagine the President getting on a commercial flight with the whole detail of his staff and security team?? Who will pay for all his staffing flight fares?? Wouldn’t it be chaotic at the airport to have the president there as a frequent flyer?? Okay some of you may say NO let him go alone without his detail staff.  Does that mean he abandons his role as President each time he goes alone on a commercial flight by himself??

How will he have the resources available to him if he is alone in the event of a catastrophic situation in America??  How will he communicate in a classified manner when talking with various high ranking staff members regarding the daily briefings about matters around the United States and internationally??  (He can’t talk on a regular cell phone regarding confidential matters between his staff).-- Without Airforce One, how will he be able to get back to the white house in a timely manner to address urgent matters?? If he uses commercial flights and he misses an important meeting because his flight was canceled, would that be okay?? Will he be excused for it??  The Point of the matter is – THE PRESIDENT IS ON DUTY 24 HOURS A DAY!!  He does not abandon his post because he travels around to talk directly to American people as oppose to being in a bubble.

On another note, it is a waste of media time and judicial activism to prosecute John Edward on his serious affairs and conspiracy theory regarding campaign money. If he is found guilty for lying and stealing campaign money, then he should serve a little time but be fined every dollar he stole from the campaign!! Bundling up all these charges and sentencing him up to thirty years in prison is extremely harsh!! How backwards are our bylaws!! People will hesitate to prosecute someone for murder ( George zmmerman) but would lynch mob adultery---- hmm ??--how twisted our system is!!
