Elizabeth Warren being "swiftboated"

By wcolin - Posted on 12 May 2012

Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren, running against incumbent GOP Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts, is being accused by some in the GOP of having used her status as 1/32 Cherokee to help gain admission to, or gain more favorable job status, at several law schools around the country. Scott Brown's campaign, in particular, is accusing Warren of listing herself as a "minority" to gain admission to the schools. It could be a case of trying to "swiftboat" the Democratic candidate for Senate.

Update:

Scott Brown makes issue of Elizabeth Warren's ancestry

I think Warren handled this poorly (you can tell she's not a life-long politician, just a really smart woman who scares Wall Street and genuinely wants to help consumers.) She should have asserted that she DOES qualify as a minority (how dare he question it?) from the start and laughed it off as desperation. It just seems so silly and he is an idiot to think her minority status is what got her into these positions rather than her intellect. The latest polls still show a neck in neck race so I sure hope he doesn't inch ahead over a dumb "non-issue" like this.

I agree that she handled it badly... and may have been considerably less than admirable if as some news reports (not just the standard right wing gas bag outlets) state  she repeatedly listed herself as a minority based on claims of being 1/32 or so Native American.

I also think this is a totally legitimate campaign issue (not that any concept of  legitimacy matters much anymore) -- more so than anybody putting his dog in a carrier strapped to the top of a car 30 years ago.

Be that as it may, she is on my short list of state candidates I can't vote for to whom I send money and, otherwise, find her to be a real American hero, flaws and all.

The JP Morgan Chase blunder should really help her get back on message. Brown is silent while she is making "policing Wall Street" a huge issue so hopefully she can nail him on ties to WS and protecting banks over consumers-thanks to an assist from JP Morgan.

Looks like the "swiftboating" did not work. However, the race is still deadlocked so it will likely come down to the wire and be based on issues that really matter, not manufactured controversies.
