US Secret Service - why no arrest, or at least intervention?
Through all the news reports, interviewer questions, and passionate reactions on part of commentators this one point has failed to surface. What about the US Secret Service's responsibility towards protecting the President and candidates for President? I haven't heard of one frothing at the mouth hatemongerer being wisked away for a serious line of questioning after literally screaming "KILL HIM!" (kill Barack Obama) in the course of a McCain/Palin hate rally". Why is that? Isn't it a universally understood such threats always brings close scrutiny be it placed on the web, through telecommunication, or within earshot of a security detail? Even if said comment was meant in jest?
And what of those stoking the fires of hatred, shouldn't they at least receive a strong caution against formenting such an atmosphere? Not just once mind you, over and over again. Over and over and over without so much as a sharp rebuttal or public expression of regret. Do supporters and members of the Republcan Party enjoy some kind of Secret Service immunity under the guise of free political speech? Ask yourself this, if this exact same scenario repeatedly played out during a series of Islamic-organized public protest what would happen? The answer is obvious.
Worth mentioning; in the entire history of the US only American citizens have assassinated American Presidents.
The law and Secret Service protection mission, as stated in the government's own website;
According to this law -- 18 USC Sec. 871 -- which reads, in part:
"...Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."
Noted no reference is made towards Presidential Candidates, but common sense and common knowledge should prevail against legal challenges. Otherwise why are the agents there in the first place?
