"Be Happy Anyway" - food for thought

By Nightporch - Posted on 07 January 2009

Here is an interesting article from YES magazine

'Painful as it may be in the short term, we can emerge from this crisis healthier and wealthier, with the sort of wealth that really matters: strong communities and relationships with loved ones, healthy ecosystems, and the skills to make a living and enjoy life.'

Enjoy.

Thanks, I forwarded to my email at work  so I can print it(too long to read right now) and my new printer is not hooked up yet. It looks like an article about what I have been saying to some of my friends, which is that maybe something good will come out of this mess. Getting back to community and simpler ways of life, stopping to smell the roses and all that.

I only kinda skimmed it, but I have to disagree with part of the article: while our wages certainly have stagnated we have so many more choices demanding a part of our income and yet many of these things which we now take for granted have definitely increased our standard of living and our expectations: cell phones, internet access, cable or satellite TV, home computers, etc.

Yes, this is truly the information age and information services and appliances have so become a part of our daily life and have become so taken for granted that saying that our standard of living has not increased in 30+ years is pretty disingenuous, IMO.

While material well-being doesn't make up the sum total of happiness, it is certainly a part of that.

But I have to say that if you had to choose between nessessities and luxuries, would you be able to to? I mean it seems like all the technology is supposed to make our lives easier, right? I certaintly find that I want more time than money these days. There is never enough time to relax, to get your chores done, etc. It seems like I sleep, work and a few hours after work to cook, do some chores, catch a littel TV and internet. The weekends go by so fast. It seems like the more stuff you have,  the more time you need to take care of that stuff, then you think about all that stuff that needs attending to and it stresses you out.

I've got plenty of free time, but then again I'm an "underachiever" and just barely middle class.

*shrug*

Tin...you shouldn't have free time. Remember that New Years resolution. Excersize. LOL

Well, I was going to walk to the store for beer instead of driving but the weather changed my mind.

Cough..cough, you mean you were going to jog there for some acai juice and grab a bag of celery to snack on, right?
