Love to Cook?

By HopeForOurFuture - Posted on 21 April 2009

Someone sent me this video today. If you are like me and hate to peel anything, esp. potatoes check this out:

I LOVE to cook. In fact, my wife refers to the kitchen, as Jons Kitchen. Even though she is in it more than I am, because of my schedule. But I love to cook. Its what I do on my days off. It relaxes me. Its my hobby.

As for the cooking tip. Thank you thank you thank you! I hate peeling potatoes (even though I make the 14 yr old do it everytime) and this will save me, or her, the hassle!

There was a similar thing in the second Good Eats episode on potatoes. Essentially the same technique, but with red potatoes, and using a kitchen towel to rub them skins off (no scoring needed).

Here's a hilarious Internet TV series where a couple of geeks try to cook and often fail miserably. Here's an animated cooking show featuring a cartoon octopus. Yup, an octopus.

When I lived outside my parents' home I often watched anything with Alton Brown in it; nowadays I collect DVDs of the same shows.

Edit: I completely forgot The Splendid Table. Lynne Rossetto Kasper doesn't do celebrity chef interviews, but her program has a lot of great tips ranging from the basics to "snooty French" level.

It's sad that we've reached a point where 'government service' is a dirty word... If we're the greatest country on earth, maybe we can have the greatest government.

Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island

One of my favorite shows in my youth.

Aw come on!

Any good suthern gal already knows this one!

We didn't use ice baths, though, we just dunked them in a pot of cold tap water.

We do?  I'm ashamed to admit, then, that I missed a vital GRITS lesson. ;-)  This one was news to me.

For you non-southerners, GRITS = Girls Raised In The South. ;-)

When you think of all those millions of gallons of potato salad churned out for fish fries and church picnics! Whew! Had to come up with some way to save the fingers!

Not to mention that potato salad is a must-have with ham, jambalaya and gumbo.....I guess us cajuns just had to do everything the hard

Well, I am a 100% southern girl who hadn't heard of this, either.

And I had never heard of eating potato salad with gumbo, either, until I started dating my own personal Cajun.

It's an odd combo to be sure, but one that cajun's swear by.  Have you ever seen them serve the potato salad in the bowl of gumbo...ewwwww

LOL  The ONLY way I have ever seen it served there is in the bowl of gumbo.  And, yes, that's how I eat it when I'm there with them, too.

I was at a thing around there once and heard a girl talking with a friend and telling her about how she had gone to someone's home once in a different part of the country and how they served their potato salad cold.  She had never heard of such a thing.  I didn't say that I had never heard of eating it warm until I went there.  (And for anyone else reading this, this isn't German potato salad that is meant to be served warm.)

I get a pass from them on being from Texas since I was born in Orange, Texas.  Ha ha.

Oh, and my husband has a huge bag of boudin that he had bought frozen thawing in my refrigerator right this moment.

I hope it's white boudin and not

I love the white, but can't stomach the idea of the red...ughhh (I'm only half

I also prefer my potato salad cold, and not plopped in my bowl of gumbo.

I've never heard of red boudin.  Is that like blood sausage?  This is pale, so I guess it is white.

I don't eat boudin much because I don't like to eat food that looks like it is wrapped in a condom.

That's exactly what it is.  I don't think they can sell the red in has to be home made.  Ugghhhh   I have to take my bouding out of the casing on a plate to eat it, for just the reason you

Maybe it's just us Mason-Dixon Suthern Girls!

Or us lazy ones.

Warm potato salad? Never had it, not sure I want to. But I have heard that cajuns love their tater salad, with everything, not just gumbo. I love tater salad with everything myself. I guess its how I was raised
