More E=mail Spam... talk me down please

By AGrandmother - Posted on 10 September 2009

Ok… after I go and start thinking people around here are growing brains… I get this…

I am so pissed I’m shaking.

I cannot believe this man.  However, he's barreling towards unemployment himself.  Woo hoo!!!   UNBELIEVABLE PRESIDENT???

Bad press, including major mockery of the plan by comedian Jon
Stewart, led to President Obama abandoning his proposal to require
veterans carry private health insurance to cover the estimated $540
million annual cost to the federal government of treatment for in juries
to military personnel received during their tours on active duty. The
President admitted that he was puzzled by the magnitude of the
opposition to his proposal.

"Look, it's an all volunteer force," Obama complained. "Nobody
made these guys go to war. They had to have known and accepted the
risks. Now they whine about bearing the costs of their choice? It
doesn't compute.." "I thought these were people who were proud to
sacrifice for their country, "Obama continued. "I wasn't asking for
blood, just money. With the country facing the worst financial crisis in
its history, I'd have thought that the patriotic thing to do would be to
try to help reduce the nation's deficit. I guess I underestimated the
selfishness of some of my fellow Americans."

Please pass this on to every one including every vet and their
families whom you know.

How in the world did a person with this mindset become our
leader? I didn't vote for him!!!

REMEMBER THIS STATEMENT... "Nobody made these guys go to war. They had
to have known and accepted the risks. Now they whine about bearing the
costs of their choice?

If he
thinks he will ever get another vote from an Active Duty,
Reserve, National Guard service member or veteran of a military service
he ought to think it over. If you or a family member is or has served
their country please pass this to them. Please pass this to every one.
I'm guessing that other than the 20-25 percent hardcore liberals in the
US will agree that this is just another example why this is the
president in American history. Remind everyone over and over how this
man thinks, while he bows to the Saudi Arabian king.

My response was…

This is another lie being spewed by the right wing nuts. Obama never said those words. He has never treated the military with anything but respect... nor has he (or anyone else) proposed that service people pay for their own service related injuries. There was a proposal to help cut federal debt by charging veterans private insurance for service related conditions (as they already do for non service related conditions.

To perpetuate this is hate mongering and is an insult not just to our president but to every man and woman who has served to defend this country. It is a disservice to this country.

Wow.  Even if Obama actually thought those thoughts, he never would have gotten so far if he ever vocalized such nonsense.

I'm also pretty pissed now.  Think of all those people believing that nonsense.

I've gotten this one in the past, so in addition to John's FactCheck link, here's the Snopes link:

Here's an investigative (??) blog piece on HuffPo (insert media bias/slant warning here) regarding right-wing mass email. What's particularly insidious, IMO, is that such campaigns neatly skirt anti-spam laws because the originator is not the one doing the mass emailing-- the readers who forward it to their friends and family are.

It's sad that we've reached a point where 'government service' is a dirty word... If we're the greatest country on earth, maybe we can have the greatest government.

Of course it fails the fact test! It wasn't that long ago! How anyone can read that crap and belive it! And perpetuate it!

So far you aren't helping. I need someone to talk me out of going out and slapping some fools!

More like this....

Good thing it's not yesterday... (Day Without Cats Day)

The style of the false statement smacks more of Michael Steele (when he's not trying to use hip-hop jargon) than Barack Obama. The President is practically never cynical in public-- whether by design or by nature.

It's sad that we've reached a point where 'government service' is a dirty word... If we're the greatest country on earth, maybe we can have the greatest government.

Lewis Black

What was that Whitehouse email to report this sort of BS? I would send them a link to this thread.

Sorry, AGrand, can't help talk you down on this one... I'm about ready to fly over and help you with the slapping!

I'm feeling a little better. I have recieved a reply from the person who sent it to me (who says she sent it to me to find out if it's true.. guess she knows now, LOL) and several people (I hit "reply all") all saying "this is a lie, don't forward it"... LOL. what is funny is one is the woman who sent it to the woman who sent it to me! I hope this catches her attention enough she decides to never forward anything like it again! (yeah, I'm dreaming).

I'm trying to figure out why I'm getting a different responce than usual... all I can guess is when I said they are insulting veterans. Everyone on the list that I reconize know my husband and I are both vets, and that my son is getting ready for his third 16 month deployment to the mideast (once in Iraq, this will be second to Afganistan). All I can think is that line keyed into the same outrage that gets people to send this crap out in the first place.

Way to go! It's awesome that you had it in you to write a sensible yet stern response. I would not have been so level-headed. But it looks like your reply was a game-changer.

Agrandmother I would call her out on her feigned innocence on the subject.

She's as capable as everyone else of going to or when she gets crap like this and then can determine BEFORE she sends it out if she's being a tool or not.

She KNOWS that. The whole point of these mass forwards is to get the lie out there to as many people as possible.

She knows THAT too.

I know... but right now I'm basking in my success in intimidating so many people via e-mail!

I am writing her a response now... explaining the harm that is done when this crap gets sent on. And pointing out how "conservatives" are marginalizing themselves with the hate mongering, and how conservatives are going to destroy any chance of federal control for possibly decades if they don’t stop it. Ok, yeah, but I’m not actually lying, just maybe exaggerating... and possibly not exaggerating that much.

I wrote to my (Republican) Congressman that whereas the GOP is looking for ideological victories, what they are going to need, and fast, are policy victories-- i.e., they will need to go to voters next year and in 2012, and account for how they made their constituents' lives better. If all they can come up with is "We stood up to a socialist President and Democrat majority!" when the economy improves on balance and only the Democrats get the credit-- not to mention, if none of their fears and rumors come to pass-- they are toast.

Lies, misinformation, and myths are not going to help the GOP, and since those who believe them won't believe the political center and left's debunking anyway, the best hope of such trash information being treated as such is if conservatives really step up and call out falsehood when they see it.

It's sad that we've reached a point where 'government service' is a dirty word... If we're the greatest country on earth, maybe we can have the greatest government.

Lewis Black

I'm so proud of you!
The sad thing is people can spread this crap without so much as an inkling of proof or a link verifying their smears. Scary time in America right now, especially for our president. I hope the vet websites fighting lies (like they did with Steele and Fox) are also on top of this...
