McCain history - a primer
I've heard some voters ask just why the GOP has such mixed feelings regarding the coronation of John McCain as its presidential nominee. An article today from the New York Times reviews a couple of the episodes in McCain lore that shed some light on why the Republicans seemed so eager to keep this guy at arms length.
I know some Republicans that speculate that his history will hurt him as a Republican nominee. Republican voters don't trust him as a true conservative, they suggest, and thus won't vote for him. But I don't see that as implying those voters would vote blue. The voters that express such sentiments are such die-hard conservatives that they would never vote for Obama or Hillary. So they'll either have to clench their teeth and begrudgingly vote for McCain, or they'll just have to sit this one out. No doubt McCain will select a true conservative running mate to try to appeal to the voters that might be skeptical of McCain's own record.
