Virginia issues

First there is the issue of huge cuts from Governor McDonnell, probably the hardest hit being education in the state with hundreds of millions in cuts. Oh, it's ok because we have so many smart Americans as is. Plus you can avoid becoming an elitist after too much education from public schools and colleges. Who needs education when Glenn Beck will tell you everything you need to know.

As for the other issue - Kelly you watch Maddow often, no? I was looking for Olympic coverage and when I turned on MSNBC she was talking about two Virginia issues (the budget not being one of them). One being the deplorable remarks made by a Republican about mothers and disabled children. The other was the removal of sexual orientation from falling under discrimination laws for state workers.

Here's the link inside the

Here's the link inside the first link with information on the cuts. A lot of cuts also go to healthcare for different people and teachers. But no raised taxes on those in the state that can afford it. What a good Republican for not raising those pesky taxes and instead cutting programs for people more in need.

Just reading more on this

Just reading more on this and it's really deplorable the cuts being made and the way it's being handled by McDonnell. All of these cuts all to avoid raising taxes.

I see the current public

I see the current public education system as a microcosm of our larger government - little accountability or value created by the money given.

Since when does adding money solve the problem?  Everyone complains about the $/person spent on healthcare but seems to have no problem on the $/person spent on education with the same poor results

Yeah, but how well do you

Yeah, but how well do you think these cuts are organized? No one is saying they we should throw money at the system but we should avoid gutting it without absolute precision because the situation could be made much worse. Cutting money without larger plans will only make a terrible education system  even worse. These cuts seem awfully rushed and huge. This doesn't even touch on the fact they he's gutting education just so they don't raise taxes on those who can afford it. Instead we affect the people who can barely affored much as far as education and healthcare.

From NYTimes.

MaryMoo-have you been paying attention to President Obama and his Education Secretary, Duncan? Wow-you must be cheering the achievement incentives and awarding money to the best ideas. Some unions aren't thrilled, but I really applaud how they are reshaping the way forward on education and truly trying to raise the bar. Just curious on your take.

I'd have to see the details, but I think McDonnell is gutting something really important. If we don't put value on education (and no-I'm not saying to just throw money at ineffective programs, but couldn't he take money saved and reallocate to a more proven education program, for example, not just take the money away?) we get more kids dropping out and not contributing to our system. Why can't fiscal conservatives see the longterm $$$ saved  by investing in kids?  I certainly hope he can justify every cut.

I am so angry that Deeds was not a better candidate. How heartless and power-hungry for McDonnell to make it ok for people to be hired or fired based on sexual orientation-to rip out an exisiting law! Granted, Don't Ask, Don't Tell essentially does the same thing, but at least we are heading in the right direction on that.

Keep saying that he is

Keep saying that he is gutting education but i haven't read anything about what is being cut?  Not saying you might not be right but there's nothing to back it up.

At somepoint you have to understand that you can't keep raising taxes.  Look at NJ - it is losing tons of money b/c people are moving from the state.  If you tax your base enough they will leave.  Raising taxes should be a last resort and removing ineffective people and programs first.

There is obviously some

There is obviously some truth to that, it's a complicated balance in this economy.

As for the cuts, we'll just have to wait and see what final reports are about these cuts. Maybe I am jumping the gun, but i'm not optimistic that end result isn't better than what I imagine.

Often the state will just

Often the state will just say "we're cutting this much funding" for each school district and those districts must find the cuts. In the past, my district handled it by combining middle school teams (resulting in bigger class size) cutting teacher aide positions (these individuals are essential especially when we have at-risk or behavior-issue kids on team) and cutting field trips or afterschool/sports/music programs. But the district refused to cut any high level positions or merge district offices and even added a PR guy and a secretary for the superintendent (priorities, right?) Luckily, the stimulus funds really helped this year. We went from 28 kids in a class to 18, restored teacher aides, and as a result state testing scores are up. Certain "cuts' make a difference.

And what about Washington,

And what about Washington, DC? Now that DC legalized gay marriage, the Catholic Church will not cover any spouse (gay or straight) for health care (for new hires.) WWJD???

Nothing but medieval

Nothing but medieval pontificating here... The Church must have gone ape-sh** when Spain legalized gay marriage.
