From CNN. Bart Stupak (Michigan) has announced his retirement. As annoying and attention-seeking as Bart Stepak was, I'm sure the Democrats wish he would stay. His seat with be very tough to keep in the D column. Maybe the "baby killer" rhetoric and death threats were the final straw. I give him credit for helping to pass the historic health care reform legislation and standing up to the Pro-Life extremists in the end to make the public understand that this bill will save lives, not destroy them.
Marquette, Michigan (CNN) -- U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, a nine-term Democratic congressman from Michigan, will announce Friday he is retiring from Congress, Democratic sources close to Stupak said.
The anti-abortion Democrat has been facing opposition from both the right and the left for his eleventh-hour deal with the White House to support the administration's health care legislation.
Stupak said he struck the deal because he was convinced that the measure bans federal funding for abortion.
The lawmaker first informed Democratic leaders last week that he was considering retiring, and he received calls from President Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others urging him to run again.
Democratic sources in Washington and Michigan said they fear the retirement of Stupak, a historically popular Democrat in the sprawling conservative 1st Congressional District, likely would mean losing his seat to a Republican in the fall.
