Spector vs. Sestak heating up
I have been intrigued by the recent surge in the polls of Joe Sestak against Arlen Spector in the Pennsylvania primary and thought it was worth a post here. Anyone have inside knowledge of what is happening and how it is happening? Wow. I wonder if Spector is regretting his switch from Republican to Democrat. Well, the truth is he never would have survived a GOP primary, so I guess he really had no choice.
From TPM. After weeks of Sestak narrowing the spread, then evenly matched in polls, he is now ahead of Spector.
Two pollsters now show Rep. Joe Sestak leading Sen. Arlen Specter in the Pennsylvania Democratic Senate primary. Over the weekend, a tracking poll of the race released by Muhlenberg College which has shown Sestak surging in the last weeks before the May 18 primary, finally showed Sestak overtaking Specter and leading the race by a margin of 45-42.
Today, a new Rasmussen poll taken on Friday showed those numbers are no fluke -- that poll shows Sestak ahead by a margin of 47-42.
The current TPM Poll Average for the race still shows Specter ahead, but by a significantly reduced margin of 45-39.
With the Muhlenberg and Rasmussen polls included, it's clear that Sestak has the clear momentum moving into the final weeks of the race.
I did think it was odd that Spector was going very negative recently, even questioning Sestak's military experience, which is unusual if you are in a commanding position-so Spector's inside polls must have made him nervous. Since President Obama is supporting Spector (Sestak has even accused the administration of begging him to leave the race, offering him a job-not sure if it's true) how will this play out if Sestak wins? How awkward would it be for Obama to campaign for Spector before the primary? Would he dare "go there?" Both Spector and Sestak trail behind the GOP candidate, Toomey, in most polls but they are shown as equals in the chances of defeating him. One of our "coffee party" members went to school with Sestak and is a huge supporter and told me there is a huge grassroots effort to help him win. Must be working...
Personally, I think Spector is too old and should have conisdered retirement, but that's just me. BTW-Although several Republicans voted for her, Spector voted against Elena Kagan in her confirmation for SG.
