How Would You Fix the Budget?

By Kelly Thomas - Posted on 26 May 2010

I saw this on the Rational Arguments website. It links to a cool budget simulator. So where would you make the cuts?

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget has a budget simulator on their site that challenges you to stabilize the debt.  You should go check it out.  It forces you to make actual decisions and put your money where your mouth is to fix the deficit.  Will you cut programs?  Will you increase taxes?  The simulator shows you how much you really need to do to get a handle on the debt.

Me?  I reduced troop involvement in other countries by a ton, cut some programs, and added a number of revenue streams.  And even then, I couldn’t come close without letting the Bush tax cuts expire for pretty much everyone.

I think that anyone running for office should be forced to complete this and make their answers public.  If they won’t, then they aren’t serious about deficit reduction, and I have no reason to trust them on the topic.

Can anyone think of a good reason not to make our politicians do this?

Well I wouldn't have balanced the budget, but I wonder what the results would be if everyone who is making over $45,000 on the government payroll took a 5% cut in pay, with no benefits added to balance the loss.
I wish there was a way we could print our results. According to my results, I would bring the budget to 60% of GDP but not until 2020. I think we need some "outside the box" solutions not included in this exercise to really make a difference.

this is fascinating.  Can someone help me understand, where corporate welfare is represented in the budget?
