President Obama to hold Press Conference September 10
From The Hill. President Obama will hold a press conference next Friday.
The White House announced Thursday that President Obama will hold a press conference next Friday.
Obama will face reporters days before lawmakers return to Washington for a final session of Congress before the mid-term election. The president is pushing Congress to move a small business bill he argues would help the flagging economy.
Democrats appear to be at risk of a drubbing at the polls, and are in danger of losing the House and Senate.
The president has come under fire for going long periods of time without taking questions. This will be his first press conference in several months, though he did take some questions from reporters at the G20 meeting in June.At this point, it is too early to tell if the news conference will be in primetime or during the day.
Let's hope he learned his lesson and we don't have any unwise comments that will lead to a Beer Summit! My guess is that he wants to:
-really
get the message out about his small business bill (and other pending
legislation the GOP can't wait to stall longer) before Congress
returns/put pressure on GOP
-maybe try to be pro-active about addressing 9/11 anniversary, pleading with people like Newt not to make it political or Islam-bashing.
-highlight the historic peace negotitations going on between Israel and Palestine.
Now which question do you think will be asked by the media first:
1. Could you update us on the peace process?
2. What do you have to say about polling that shows 20% of people think your're a Muslim? (If it's Fox News) Can you confirm today you are not?
3. What is your response to Glen Beck's rally?
My guess is # 2 or #3 given the pretty narrow-minded media we have.

Now which question do you think will be asked by the media first:
When are you going to release your college records?
Now which question do you think will be asked by the media first
FOX News: "To which Muslim sect do you belong?"
MSNBC: "Can I kiss you?"
NPR: "What's your favorite Star Trek episode?"
CNBC: "Did you hear that XYZ Pharmaceuticals is a screaming buy? Now, stay tuned for a word from our sponsor, XYZ Pharmaceuticals."
ROFLMBO!

MSNBC: "Can I kiss you?"
You guys crack me up. Now I am filled with anticpation to hear the first question and all the rest of those "important" ones. And wouldn't it be great for President Obama to call them out once in awhile?
Fox News: Mr. President, does it concern you that a 3 star retired general (who happens to be a contributer to Fox News) is supporting the Army Birther who refuses to report for duty until you show him your birth certificate? Are you fearful the case of Orly Taitz is gaining steam?
President Obama: (holding back laughter) What the F*%# did you just ask me? Let me start off by saying that is the dumbest question I have ever heard. That question basically confirms that you are an idiot and your news organization is a joke. I know we gave Fox News a better seat, but I have just put you on a warning. One more insane question about my birth certificate and you'll be getting the back seat or YOU'LL be on the next plane to Kenya to investigate further with the tabloid journalists! Next question...
From CNN. President Obama to unveil new economic plan on Wednesday. It does include tax breaks/extensions but we all know that does not mean GOP members will go along with it. If Obama is for tax breaks, suddenly they are against them! We've seen this movie before...
(CNN) -- With less than two months to go until a critical midterm election likely to turn on the economy, President Obama this week will lay out a new plan that includes a proposal to extend a tax cut popular with the business community, according to an administration official.
The official said the president will push Congress to permanently extend the tax credit for business research and development costs.
That proposal will cost $100 billion and be paid for by closing other corporate tax breaks, according to the official.
Obama will lay out the proposal during an economic speech Wednesday in hard-hit Cleveland, Ohio, but the official stressed the business tax cut will not be the only part of the new plan. "This is a key element, but not the sum of our new proposals," the official said.
Administration officials previously told CNN the president is considering a payroll tax holiday as well as new infrastructure spending, among several proposals his economic team has been weighing.
Democrats are finally making that "pivot" to jobs (the one promised right after health care reform) but is it too late to save them from being crushed by the GOP in November? Will people realize how awful this recession was, how Obama's policies have helped and led us in the right direction despite what the media and GOP "machine" has told us, decide to be patient and give the Democrats more time to make an impact, or will they vote in an irrational manner (as history tells us is common) and put the culprits of this mess back in power to take us backwards once again? I sure hope people use their brains and not their emotions because if the GOP has it's way, they'll nullify Wall Streey reform, repeal health care (do seniors want that donut hole again, do voters want insurance companies free to penalize them for pre-exisiting conditions?) protect companies like BP at tax-payer expense, send us into deeper deficits by extending tax cuts for the wealthy, and much more damage. Please let this be the one election where common sense beats the fear-mongering! Democrats better make sure their message machine is perfect in order to knock off the very talented, clever, sneaky marketing experts in the GOP.
From CNBC. Looks like more details are trickling out. President Obama also to announce $50 billion infrastructure jobs plan this week.
President Barack Obama will announce Monday a six-year infrastructure revamp plan with an initial investment of $50 billion to jump-start job creation, a white house official said.
Obama is committed to working with the Congress to fully fund the program, which also includes a proposed infrastructure bank to leverage private capital, the official said. Obama will make the announcement in Milwaukee, the official added.
Obama launches several economic initiatives this week aimed at generating some desperately needed U.S. job growth and limiting predicted Democratic losses in Nov. 2 congressional elections.
Struggling to persuade Americans that his economic policies are working, Obama will use appearances to set the tone for the autumn campaign.
The argument he will make on trips to Milwaukee and Cleveland and a rare White House news conference is this: Democratic policies have stopped the bleeding and produced some economic growth. Yes, more needs to be done, but Republicans would bring back ideas, he will argue, that propelled the country into the deepest recession in 70 years.
I want to know why didn't the Bush tax cuts prevent job lose if they are as helpful as they say? Where are the jobs?
Overseas... it was the season of outsourcing.

...economists questioned why the administration is not proposing a major payroll tax cut to spur hiring. The White House considered the idea, according to officials, but dismissed it in part because it would reduce revenues to Social Security and Medicare.
Good! He keeps making sounds like the gloves are coming off...
We got to start paying for these wars.
Umm, I'm pretty sure they did at the time they were enacted.
Just like the stimulus, it's kinda hard to determine what would have happened if they hadn't been enacted.
Remember, we were in a pretty bad downturn in 2000-2001, and after the 9/11 attacks the economy could have slipped still further without the tax cuts, IMO.
From TPM. Remember that Gallup Poll last week that gave the GOP a 10 point advantage in a generic match-up and was all over the news and bragged about by every Republican operative? Well, this week, Gallup has them all tied up at 46% Democrats 46% Republicans. Let's hope this is more like it and the 10 point gap was an outlier. I know I am the forever optimist but I can certainly see that, despite this glimmer of hope, most signs point to huge losses for the Democrats in November. If Nate Silver is saying it, they are probably in big trouble. Some experts are now even predicting the GOP will take the House and maybe even the Senate (Lord help us-thank goodness President Obama will have veto power!) But maybe these very low expectations for the Dem's will play in their favor-who knows? I just find it odd that Democrats are still raising money in record amounts-if the "base" is so disgusted, why do they continue to give? The enthusiam gap may be real (who can compete with the tea party anger?) but does that mean all the Democrats will stay home or will most, in the end, be motivated to keep the GOP out of power?
And Misty-great points about the gloves coming off and sticking to what matters and the bottom line (yes-paying for those wars that Bush seemed to ignore the price tag of.) I noticed these new policies are not being well-received by people like Krugman on the left (too little, too late and won't work fast enough to help Dem's in Nov.) and will be a tough sell to the right (is this a new stimulus? why wasn't the first one good enough?) but nobody can say he is ignoring jobs and the economy with these proposals. He is putting together a package that could be "passable" and make a difference in the future. Since the policies won't kick in until after the election, is it possible he is just doing this because it's the right thing to do rather than an election gimmick? That doesn't sound very Washington, DC! President Obama is pretty patient and likes to see the big picture.
