The Republican Attack on Pelosi: Democratic Stupidity Items #5643 - 44
Chris Matthews is hosting two Democrats from the house, one moderate from western PA (Altmire) and one liberal from MD (Cummings), talking about the campaign against Pelosi. I like Pelosi and I like Cummings, but how moronic is this.
He defends Pelosi because she was a victim of being demonized by Republicans; anyone in her position would have been demonized. Republicans presented "phenomenal" opposition and she was a victim of that.
Attention Democratic morons.
1/ You did not face "phenomenal opposition." You faced opposition. The same kind of opposition you faced in the 1950s when Democrats were painted as soft on communism. The same kind of oppositon you faced in 1972 when McGovern was painted as soft on defense. The same kind of opposition you faced when Kerry was painted as an effete rich elitist who windsurfs (plus Vietnam era coward) against Bush's wood chopping bike riding all american rancher. What was phenomenal in 2010 was not the opposition but your skull splitting inability to anticipate it, defend against it, to say nothing of counter attack.
2. The story for this last election was NOT that Republicans demonized one of your leaders and ran her as an opponent in virtually every district. The story is that you did not respond in kind. You had John Boehner, a freakishly over tanned, golf junket addict, and corporate stooge who is as bad on TV as Pelosi. Clips from him could scare children. You ran anti-Boehner ads for one week (starting months after the Pelosi atttacks). Hannity, George Will, and David Brooks mocked your attack saying it would not work. So you stopped the campaign immediately.
Guess what: That meant that Republicans did not have to make elaborate explanations in their tv ads as to why you should vote for them; they flashed bad pictures of Pelosi and whipped in a few phrases. You, on the other hand, had nothing visual or immediate -- just a few vague allusions to the Bush era (too lame after 20 months) but you did not mention his name or use visuals to advance your attack. So you had to try to explain your ponderous legislative agenda.
The fact that you did not lose 100 seats is a borderline miracle.
Frankly, I don't care if Pelosi is speaker or not. She is better on camera than Harry Reid, but that can be said of most vertibrates, and no worse than Cantor.
I do care that professional political democrats wake up every morning, a la GROUNDHOG DAY, only to discover -- for the first time yet again -- that conservatives fight really really hard to win.
