This is crazy. GOP are both happy and kind of worried even more about 2012. Obama scores a huge victory with this. I thought democrats were weak on terror. There's so much to go through. I wish I could see reactions from conservatives everywhere when they found out Obama did what Bush couldn't do and all of that.

Maybe people will start looking at how the President has ramped up the war on terror during his first 2.5 years in office. He makes Bush's operations in Afghanistan/Pakistan/Yemen/Horn of Africa look like child's play.
We've been kicking some serious ass over there. Maybe the President will finally get some credit.

As far as the national security issue is concerned, this is a huge thing that the President will be able to hang his hat on for a long, long time. It will be a lot easier to shut up his critics now. Unless something completely unforeseen and terrible happens between now and November 2012, this is all we'll have to mention.

Statement by former-President George W. Bush
May 1, 2011
Earlier this evening, President Obama called to inform me that American forces killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of the al Qaeda network that attacked America on September 11, 2001. I congratulated him and the men and women of our military and intelligence communities who devoted their lives to this mission. They have our everlasting gratitude. This momentous achievement marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001. The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done.
As for my take, well, I'm not usually one to celebrate anyone's death and I would have preferred him to be taken alive before his execution. But I can accept this, and can accept that it means a certain measure of closure for a dark time in our history.
Not that this is over, not by a long shot. It is a major propaganda coup and a PR victory for us, but Al-Quaeda is an organization of organizations. They're like a hydra, you can't just kill it by chopping off one head.

Thanks so much for posting President Bush's comments. I think at a time like this we should put poltics aside - Bush's comments are very classy.
To your point about it not being over, I absolutely agree - the fragmented nature of Al-Quaeda is one of the characteristics that makes it so difficult to combat. However, I have to consider the changes that are taking place in the Arab world, especially in the youth. As a whole Arab youth seem more enamored with Democracy than a belief system that promises suicide. Perhaps I'm naive and pollyanna here but I think the tide is turning.

Was talking to my neighbor and he said (and I agree) that Obama is in the most danger he's ever been at this point.
Unfortunately, Al-Quida will not have to import an assassin, they could find a home grown "hero" by parlaying one of the indoctrinated Obama haters into doing the shooting.

I had the same thought; but my concern is about the fanatical right who seem to find clever ways of amping up hostility toward Pres. Obama. They'll now be even more concerned about a second term............

I cannot believe what I am reading. Now I generally do not support taking another human's life, but I am so glad to hear this news! The world's most wanted terrorist has been eliminated, and we have scored a huge victory in the War on Terror. And yes, this is a major foreign policy success for the Obama administration.

This news is one of the big reasons why I chose to vote for Obama in 2008: He was the candidate who spoke with the most common sense approach and the most conviction on how to achieve this goal.
I heard on the NPR report that the orders were specifically to kill - not capture - bin Laden. That was the only choice in how to issue this order, IMO.

provides the following image and caption: "Muddy Waters coffee house in
New London, CT. This sign was posted first thing Monday morning to
recognize the United States' announcement that Osama bin Laden had been
killed by U.S. forces. Barry Neistat, the owner of the café, said the
reason for the giveaway was simple. 'He’s the personification of evil
to me,' said Neistat. 'When I look at him, I see the devil.'"
Another interesting coincidence: The news of Bin Laden's death started to become known to the public in the 9th inning of a 1-1 game between the Mets and the Phillies. Think about it. 9 (9th inning), 11 (1-1 tie), New York, Philadelphia (representing the state where flight 93 crashed in Shanksville).

Yesterday was a blessed on. I celebrated the birthday of my son, and then the death of OBL. I know that this will never bring back the lives of those who are gone, but I hope it helps ease some pain.
The way Obama conducted this entire operation is the way I expect our leader(s) to act. I will proudly vote for him once again, and I hope that others who doubted him...will open their eyes.

No such luck, a friend of mine is participating in a facebook page "the truth about Osama" and sure enough it is implying that Osama died quite some time ago of kidney failure.
The current hoopla is just a ploy to get Obama reelected.

You can trust Dick Cheney and his friends to sour anything good that happens. Can we just ship Cheney and Yoo, etc off to the Hague for War Crimes? I'd really like to see the President come out with a strong repudiation of any enhanced interrogation techniques used, and emphasize that this was the result of patient, and thorough intelligence observation.

Two weird coincidences.
This is the anniversary of the mission accomplished blunder by Bush.
And it's been roughly 3,500 days since 9/11. Might be exactly that, I didn't here.
Truly, a mission accomplished with Bin Laden dead. I liked the one comment on the Frumforum;
I guess Obama really did have more important business to tend to instead of playing around with Birthers

I agree, but the ones who remain will be more virulent in the short term future.
Complete agreement on the short term future; that's why our intelligence community remains so very crucial in the fight.
Idealogical shifts don't happen overnight.
