Huge drawdown of troops in Iraq?

By John Martin - Posted on 06 September 2011

The rumors are swirling.

When you compare it to the 45,000 troops we currently still have in Iraq, the 3000 number that's out there seems dangerously small. I'm not even sure if I approve of having that few 10 years from now. I like the savings we'd get from this, but I'm afraid that it might just be inviting disaster-- and during an election year, no less.

The main thing keeping Obama away from an onslaught of Jimmy Carter comparisons right now is the lack of a major international catastrophe. If he wants to bring us down to 20,000 or 15,000, I could understand that. But if something goes wrong with the miniscule number it seems like he's considering, it's going to be easy as pie to blame the President.

Gee...surprise surprise!  This info came courtesy of good old Fox News.  The White House has denied this.   http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/09/white-house-denies-report-that-pentagon-plans-to-reduce-troops-in-iraq-to-3000.php?ref=fpb

I hope you're right. I hope that whatever drawdown we see is nowhere near that number anytime soon.

Fox reported it, but a lot of others (liberal outlets included) passed it along without question, giving some creedence to the story. Glad to hear the White House denying it.
